American RV Electrical Fault — Would Not Start | ECU Wire Traced & Repaired

Uncategorized

American RV motorhome electrical fault diagnosis

When an American RV or motorhome won’t start, the list of potential causes is long. But with a systematic approach and the right diagnostic knowledge, the culprit can be tracked down — and that’s exactly what happened on this job. The vehicle was completely dead: no crank, no start, nothing obvious in the fuse boxes. All signs pointed somewhere deeper.

The Symptom: American RV Would Not Start

The customer brought in their American motorhome with a frustrating no-start fault. The engine wouldn’t crank at all. Initial checks ruled out the battery, starter motor, and main fuse links — everything looked healthy on the surface. The fault had to be electrical, and it had to be traced.

Fault Diagnosis: Tracing Back to the ECU

Using wiring diagrams and a systematic voltage-drop and continuity trace, we worked through the ignition circuit, immobiliser loop, and starter relay feed. Eventually, the fault path led us straight to the back of the ECU (Engine Control Unit) — one of the most common but often overlooked areas on older American imports where vibration, heat cycling, and age can cause wiring to fail at the connector block.

A close inspection revealed a broken/open circuit wire at the ECU harness — invisible from the outside but confirmed with a meter. The ECU wasn’t receiving the signal it needed to allow the engine to start. Classic no-start fault caused by a single failed wire.

The Repair

The faulty wire was repaired with a proper solder and heat-shrink splice — no crimp connectors, no shortcuts. The repair was made to a high standard to ensure reliability and prevent the fault recurring. The ECU harness was re-secured to prevent further vibration damage, and the connector was reseated correctly.

After the repair, the RV fired up first time. Full function confirmed — fault found, fault fixed.

Why American RVs Can Be Tricky to Diagnose

American motorhomes and RVs use different electrical standards and wiring conventions to European vehicles. Many UK garages won’t touch them — either because they lack the wiring diagrams, the diagnostic equipment, or the experience. At Just Autos & Electrical, we’re comfortable working on American imports: we trace faults methodically and don’t guess.
